The Bangalore School of Music offers instrumental and vocal courses for western classical music and will soon add Indian classical disciplines to our portfolio. Our professional and inspirational faculty will guide you through the conceptual, technical and historical aspects of classical music, creating a learning experience that brings out the creative and artistic musician in you.

  Molly Zacharaias
Molly began her career teaching music and English at the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Mumbai and, has been associated with the BSM since 1986 as piano teacher and accompanist. She has managed group singing classes for 18 years at the Bangalore International School.

She earned  her M.A and B.Ed from St. Xavier's College in Bombay and passed the L.T.C.L with Mr. Joseph D'Lima, teacher and leader of the Bombay Philharmonic Orchestra (1960's). As a part of a five-member BSM team, has visited the Royal College of Music, Sweden in 2003 to study Group Method Techniques, children's choirs and general principles of Pedagogy.

Molly is presently a consultant in the Western Music Department of Vidya Niketan School, Hebbal. In addition, teaches the piano at the BSM mainly in the 7-15 years category, preparing students for the TCL and RCM exams.
 
  Premila Grubb
Mrs Grubb started learning the piano during her primary school education in a convent in Malaysia, where singing and folk dancing was part of the curriculum.

Premila's music teachers in school taught her to appreciate different kinds of music through songs; they inspired her to learn how to play them. Mrs. Gita Menon in Chennai, a brilliant performer inspired and encourage
d her to complete her diploma exams. She believes that, "Music is good for the soul and helps to bring people, especially children, closer. It makes for pleasant interaction among them." She joined the BSM in June 1987 and worked for a year, joined again in 1997, making it a total of ten years here.
 
     
       
 
  Rebecca Thomas
Rebecca began learning the piano at the age of 9, encourage by her parents. They had a piano at home and it was a good instrument to play in the church and with friends.

She adds, "Music gives joy, satisfies desires fulfills dreams; can be shared with others and brings people together like nothing else can." She's been with the school since 1991 as a
student teacher and now as a therapist and a teacher

She had the privilege of accompanying students of other instruments and the choir. At the BSM she's performed at concerts and met people from various walks of life who have a similar passion for music. She enjoys teaching children of various ages and helping them fulfill their goal of learning music is the best part of being a music teacher.
 
  Ruby Alphonse
Ruby started learning to play the piano by ear eight years back. It was one of her favorite instruments and she's interested in Bach, Mozart and Chopin.

With the BSM for almost two years, Ruby finds that teaching has helped her improve her study too.
 
     
       
 
  Shiela Mascarenhas (Outreach Teacher)
Mrs. Mascarenhas, who began playing the piano at the age of 13 says, "my sisters and I started learning on a hired piano."
You'll see Sheila beaming at recitals; her motivation comes from hearing a good piano recital. She believes that music, "Greatly improves the quality of one's life with regard to self confidence and relationships."

  Dinesh K
Dinesh started playing the guitar on his own when he was in school in 1995. He started his own rock band after playing for two years.

He says, "its the most beautiful instrument in the world."


His influences were Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Bonfire, Bad Company, Collective Soul etc. John William, Julean Bream and David Russel inspired him when he started learning the classical guitar.

Dinesh believes that music has no boundaries, and his learning at the BSM shows us this! So far, he's learnt the classical guitar under Kenneth Isaac.
 
  John Felix
John started learning music in 1985. The fascinating sound of the guitar drew him to learn music.

Initiated into classical technique by Nicholas Furtado. Subsequently attended master classes with overseas artists like Calle L, Adam Khan and  Roger Zimmerman to name a few. He has taught at the Bangalore School of Music since 1994.

John's draws inspiration from Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix and a few local musicians. Associated with the BSM since 1992, John has this to say, "Learning music has exposed me to one of the finest things in life. Teaching music has been a good experience; it has taught me patience and been a learning experience also. The concerts, The East west encounter, the seminars and interaction and the work shops with foreign artists have all been enriching."
 
     
       
 
  Kenneth Issac
Kenneth confesses he turned to music because he was bored with the other things in life. Today, he finds that music brings piece of mind and it conveys what one cannot express verbally.

Initially a student of music at the BSM under Mr. Nicholas Furtado, he completed his school and college in Bangalore and has
been a permanent part of the faculty at the BSM for the past 15 years.

His several successful accomplishments include participation in master classes and workshops conducted by the following guitarists - Adam Khan (England), Roger Zimmerman (Germany), Antonio Chaino (Portugal), Timothy Walker (England), Dagoherto Linhares (Switzerland), Pierre Sanchez (France), Marco Socias (Spain), Martin Kaajii (Holland), Jorgos Panetsos (Greece), Duo Astor (France and Spain), Dr. Paul Grore (USA) to name a few. Kenneth was also invited to the Royal School of Music, Stockholm (Sweden) for master classes with guitarists Mats Bergstrom, Peter Berlin Carlson and Calle' Ljunqvist.


"The sound of the classical guitar appealed to me a great deal. It has this warm and soothing quality of sound, which attracted me to this instrument," His inspirations - blues, jazz, classical musicians and composers of the world, and the 1970's -80's rock musicians..
 
  Nikhil George (on study leave at Royal College of Music, London)
Nikhil started learning music when he was 13. Coming from a family of singers, he says he was left with no choice!

A 23 year old self taught musician, he has achieved a B.Sc. from the Nagpur University in 2004 and has successfully passed the LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London) Recital Diploma Examination in December 2005. He was one of the few (if not the
only) guitarists to have successfully passed this exam last year.

In Dec' 2003 I was the trainer, singer and accompanist to the only singing ensemble in the country to be invited to perform at the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the U.G.C (University Grants Commision) at Delhi.

Alongside teaching at the BSM, he is a freelance vocal instructor, composer and a guitarist/vocalist,  giving public concerts at numerous venues including the BSM, Alliance Francaise and various exclusive hotels. He is also part of the BSM's senior guitar quartet.  Nikhil has been admitted to the Royal College of Music, London to pursue a Masters in Composition for Screen and is inviting sponsorships and scholarships for the same.
 
     
       
 
  Soumitra Mukherjee
Has been involved in Music Education since 1985, first at the Delhi School of Music and since 1994, at the BSM. He has conducted Music Appreciation / Guitar workshops with various groups. Saumitra plays both Classical & Western Guitar and has attended guitar workshops under
Angelo Fessaro, Michael Rutscho, and William Mathews.

The finger plucking approach enables a player to play harmonic/harmonised/choral music rather than mere linear patterns." He adds, "Music helps in integrating the spiritual, mental and the physiological in a happy confluence."

Teaching music at the BSM since 1994, he remarks, "My memory of the BSM is of the people who make it up, the happy camaraderie, sociability that mark my interaction with colleagues. This is what I carry with me."

  Victor Thomas Abraham
Victor started leaning how to sing and play the guitar in school.

Today, Victor sings, plays the Guitar, the Piano and the Organ. He says, "I took to voice training first because that was the only instrument I had! The voice is an instrument given to us by God, and we should culture it just like a pearl to make it beautiful and most
valuable. It is free and with proper care needs no repair and becomes more valuable as the days and years go by."
 
  Paulette Demello
Mrs Demello began learning music at the age of 6 with the recorder, 2 years later she began learning the piano. She began learning the flute 16 years ago from Prof. H.J.Koellreutter, a German conductor, flautist and composer.
Her experience and skill has been honed over the years, having attended master classes of visiting flautists like Brigitte Buxdorf, of the Conservatoire of Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland, flautists of visiting Ensembles and Orchestras from Germany, Holland, UK and other countries.

As a member of the BSM Chamber Orchestra conducted by V.Narayanaswamy, she has built a reputation as a fine and sensitive teacher who has nurtured and developed innumerable students in the art of recorder playing.

She believes that, "Music has a positive effect on the whole human being and is a welcome change to the intellectual work that we do most of the time; it also helps us to be in the here and now, even if we play a simple scale, which explains why we feel refreshed after having played music."

V. Narayanaswamy ("NS")

"Music is a life long companion. You just have to listen and emulate. Creating music is a joy not only to yourself but to others around you. It is like a beautiful painting and an amazing piece of architecture."

'N.S' or 'MAESTRO' as he is known, joined the Frank Anthony public school eight years ago. Under his dedicated leadership and direction the school's brass band and choir have consistently grown in self confidence and performance skills.

As Music Director and Head of Academics at B.S.M. he has contributed substantially by building up the chamber orchestra and its repertoire to cover musical masterpieces from the baroque period to twentieth century popular music. He has conducted the our orchestra for its five east-west encounters as well as a performance at the annual Gandhi Jayanthi Concerts, accompanying celebrity foreign soloists. He is also a widely appreciated composer.

 
  Sahay Kumar
Sahay Kumar started learning to play the keyboard in 2002. He was interested long before but had no opportunity.

Teaching at the BSM for a year now, Sahay says that music contributes joy, peace and happiness to life.

  Ashish Biswas
Mr Ashish Biswas started playing the Cello from the age of 8. He was inspired by watching a concert of symphony orchestra in Calcutta. Out of all the instruments, he found the Cello most interesting.

His unblemished record of performances over the years is exemplified by projects for AIR (All India Radio)
in Calcutta, as a cello soloist as well as a guitarist; playing cello for the Calcutta, Bombay and Delhi symphony orchestras; Bollywood Movie scores with various Indian orchestras over the past 25 years, with big names such as A.R.Rehman, Ilayaraja, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Pt.Ravi Shankar and Satyajit Ray to name a few.

He has taught cello at the BSM for the past 4 years and performed with the BSM Chamber Orchestra and String Quartet.

He has this to add, "I have wonderful memories in BSM. Meeting different people, playing with world class musicians, playing in concerts with great musicians. I enjoy my teaching time with my students. Co-operative friends and connections to theses things have changed my lifestyle. I have gained good contacts with different people and personally my music knowledge has developed by which I can give the best to my students of BSM."
 
  Peter Appaji
Peter Appaji began learning music during his college days.

Inspired by watching other artists perform, took to music again after marriage and completing a degree in Engineering (1991) when he I had time for other curricular activities. He likes the Violin as it sounds closer to the human voice.

He says playing a violin is, "A technique to be mastered with a deep passion and the attitude of utmost respect followed with sincere practice." Peter has spent more than 13 years as a student and teacher at the BSM. He feels he's got the knack to "teach youngsters who don't know music, encouraging them in every way, to find the right skill."

 
     
       
 
   Noel Gerard
 Noel Gerard has been a student of the BSM from 1997, & comes from a family of musicians while Noel studied the violin, one of his brother’s plays the double bass, while another, the violin. Noel studied under Peter Appaji, Jody McComb & Stefan Pöntinen. He plays the violin with both the Youth & Senior Orchestras at the Music School, & also teaches at the Music School & at an International School.
 
   Alice Yeadell
 Alice studied music at Canterbury Christchurch University, London and has been playing with reputed Quartets, Ensembles & Orchestras in the UK & teaching music for the last 11 years. She has been a key faculty member with The Bangalore School of Music where she teaches Violin and also helps with the junior and senior orchestras.
